There are 2 types of head bolts. The earlier cars had torque to a given FtLb rating.
Later headbolts were stretch type or torque angle type. I.e. torque down to a certain value, then turn another 45 degrees from this value. This type does not require a retorque the earlier type does. Bolts need to be dipped in engine oil then allowed to sit for a while and drip/drain before use. and do make sure you chase the threads in the block first.
Are your head bolts waisted? what does it say on the head of the bolt?

Ok thanks! I did clean the bolts, chase the block threads, coat and drain them in oil, oil the washers to have a smooth torque value and set them at 56 ftb. Ill run it for a bit and re torque in another 500 or so miles. On re torquing do you back them off first as I have read or just continue to try and tighten? Got it allo running last night now to put the hood on and bleed rear brakes from a hose replacement.
