There is an "A" stamped on the intake pulley and and "S" stamped on the exhaust pulley.

And the exhaust has the lip on the front of the pulley, the intake on the rear.

That's true of most, but some later model pulleys don't have a lip at all. Of course, I don't know what years those are.

Denise, I had a 2.0 installed and I don't see the A or the S stamped on the cam pulleys. Where are they stamped? I have a 7 and a 9 stamped on the front of mine. One pulley has two alignment holes in parallel with each other, the other pulley has only one. Does anyone know how to differentiate the two?
Thanks

The easiest way to tell is to look at the dowel hole that keys the pulley to the camshaft , and look at the alignment marks. When standing in front of the engine, facing the pulleys, if the camshaft dowel holes are straight up (12 o'clock position), the the alignment marks for each pulley should point toward the center of the engine. This rule should apply regardless of whether or not the pulleys are stamped and whether or not there are belt guides at the front or back of the pulleys.

Thanks Alvon,
I have looked at mine and the alignment marks are to the outside of the dowel. This means I have to reverse them. The alignment marks are just a few degrees off from the dowel marks, so one has to look closely, but you can tell which is inside from outside.

With respect to the question of when the cam wheel lips (flanges) were eliminated, based on looking at engines I have, I believe that occurred during or after the 80 model year. At the same time the lip on the aux. pulley was moved to the rear to keep the belt from running off the back – the front pulley on the crank keeps the belt from running forward. My '76 and '78 engines have flanges on the front of the exhaust and aux pulleys and on the rear of the intake pulley. I have a '79 with the same set-up. I have an '80 with the same except for a flangeless exhaust pulley. My '82 has flangeless on both intake and exhaust with a flange on the back of the aux pulley.
