So the driver's front is regular clockwise and passenger is reversed counter-clockwise.
Why not the other way around so it tightens with forward rotation in case of failure?
Maybe it is a simple explanation but it seems backwards to me.

Yes it seems backwards to me also, I have one car that I did swap the spindles. I makes no difference as long as the tang washer is under the nut, no way is the nut going to rotate unless the washer is missing or the tang breaks off.
