just a strange one, every once in a while when i'm on the highway, i get a puff of smoke through the tranny tunnel opening.i have never been able to tell if it was gear or engine oil, however it's driving me nuts, anyone ever run into this one?

Its very common for the distributor oil seal to leak and drop oil on the hot exhaust manifold.

I have leaky seals an oils drip on the exhaust. I dont get it so much at highway speed, but at stop lights and such. You can take the gearshift and stuff off and replace the rubber seal inside, would probably help.
