Replacing windshield seal

Post by jprisbe »

I'm contemplating replacing the windshield seal on my '76 124 Spider.

Anyone done this and have any advice?

I've checked three vendor catalogs and the seals run from 127.00 to 160.00.
Why the vast difference?
Is one better than the other?
How well do they fit and seal?

Thanks,

I called about windshields locally.... $210.00. Lowest vendor price on a seal seems to be around $127.00.

Local glass shop will get me a windshield and seal for $350.00 total. That includes installation and lifetime leak warranty.

I'm thinking I'll let them do the work after I remove the dash so they don't mess it up.

I don't blame you. I remember Ron putting my windshield back together after painting the car. Even though he's done it many times, it's not something I'd want to try.

replacing that seal is not an easy job, and takes two people.

I enjoy doing the work myself, but the $$ savings would be negligible in this instance, so I might as well let them do it and get the lifetime nationwide leak warranty to boot.

I do plan to remove the old windshield myself so I can deal with any rust that might be lurking inside the frame.
