Frustrated

Post by zappi »

Hi all. Made the mistake of taking off the choke off of my 28/32 adha carb. Yeah I know, chuck it. However for now I need to tune it. That being said what is the correct procedure of reinstalling the choke? I had a really rough idle for a while but now it wont start again. I purchased the book Webbers by Pat Braden but it is pretty much useless. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, not sure what you are after here, but,
If it won't start it is not because of the lack of a choke. So you need to find out why it is not starting.
Having a functional choke will certainly make starting easier, so you are on the right track as far as putting choke back on, but first, let's get the car running.... Spark at the plugs??? Fuel squirting down barrels of carb?? Compression??

Battery good, spark good. Ran the car last week, came back to it today and it wont start. Fuel actually shooting to ceiling in squirts. Timing marks are bang on, distributor pointing to fourth cylinder with 4th point.

removing the choke should have no effect on "fuel shooting to ceiling". All the choke does is richen the mixture, so pumping the pedal a few times should allow it to start although it won't run very well when cold. It sounds like you have another problem. Fuel shooting back through the carb indicates firing or compression when the intake valve is open

Bat good, Have spark, have gas all timing marks line up. Distributor rotor lining with mark on shaft pointing to #4 cylinder. Plenty of fuel entering carb. Can crank continuously with only a backfire. Doesnt even sound like she want so to start. I have been reading about the magnetic pick up so I will check that.

If the needle valve seat is loose too much gas will build up in the float bowl and shoot out the air corrector jets. Runs like crap too. You have to take the top off the carb (6 screws) and check the little brass fitting under the float.

how are you checking spark?

With my Blue Pointe inline tool. Goes between plug and wire and illuminates when you turn over engine.

since you're at a uncertain point, I'd remove the spark plug and ground the side electrode, then crank it and see if the plug actually fires

Tried that a few days ago. This one is really puzzling me. I ordered a replacement distributor trigger just to try to eliminate anyting that I can. I will post as anything comes up. Thanks again for any suggestions.

Back up a bit, "Tried that a few days ago" . When you "Tried that" did you get any spark at the plug??

while the plug was out, did you check compression? Since you seem to have spark at the plug, can you have someone crank the engine while you have a timing light attached to see if it's firing at the right time?
