Pumpkin Spider

Post by Danwilson »

Hello everyone! What a great site this is.
My name is Dan, and for the last few years I've been slowly restoring my 78 spider.
I stripped it down over 5 years ago, and have been working slowly towards the rebuild.
The paint came from Eastwood and the small garage doubled as a paint/body booth. The painter/ body man had never tried to do this type of work before, but friends alike seem think I missed my calling, but no, I still won't paint another car.
I've got a Mid-west 124 build up of an 1800 with 10/1's, 40/80's, big valves and I'm currently running a Weber DFEV and love it, although Mr.Mid-west has just finished rebuilding my IDF 40's. That's a project for this winter though.
The car is now up and running well. Have been having a blast ripping up empty 2 lane black top, here in Northern Cal. Gotta get her all broke in, and soon.
I'm currently finishing the interior install in a mad dash to make "Oregon 2010" coming up this weekend.
Looking forward to enjoying this site with everyone here.
Dan

Looks great I love the black and orange combo! Did you put those corner gussets in? My 78 doesn't have them. Did you use the 1800 block?

Thanks for the nice comments. it's been a labor of love.
Yes, as mentioned it is an 1800 block with 10/1's, lightened, balanced, 40/80, big valves and springs, and Logan's special head work based on the Croft example. Right now I'm running the single plane manifold w/32/36 DFEV.
I've added 1x2 steel box channel around the upper engine compartment on both sides and firewall, then added gossets at the corners. Below, I added 2x2 angle iron along the frame rails, and ran through bolts all the way through the frames after adding crush tubes inside the rail frames. I've got a few photos I'll try to post later detailing that project, and a comment or two on how I would do it again. God forbid!
It's back to the garage... Oregon 2010 awaits!

He's right down the road from me, Eureka. Watch the freeway tomorrow, Steve. You should see some of the Bay Area guys on their way to Oregon. Better yet, hop in your car and go!

Hi , gosh that spider looks a lot like mine. Great minds..... looks like your hood even fits right.

I built the car to enjoy the local twisty roads we have around way up here. It's got poly bushings, koni red's, 1 inch/5/8 sway bars, and cut coils and a re-enforced frame. ( That just means it will break somewhere else!)
Here in Northern Ca. and Humboldt county in particular, we have roads just made for my spider. Around here I like Highway 36 between Hydesville ( where Trey lives ) out to the Trinity County line. It's almost all 2 lane and most sections are tight and void of much traffic.
Pierre is driving up to Eureka today in his fly yellow spider, and after brews tonight, both he and I are driving up Highway 96 bright and early, to I-5 on our way to Oregon 2010.
Trey is right, come up HPR this weekend and enjoy the fellowship and Fiats. Friday, the club has the sole use of the Medford autocross track, and the rest of the weekend is spent driving around the surrounding country side, camping and enjoying others company.
Your car looks great Steve.. come on up and share, even if just for the day if you can, we'd love to meet you!
