So lately out of seemingly nowhere, my Spider has been randomly (it seems) revving without me pushing down the gas pedal. At first it kind of seemed like something was catching the throttle, so we removed the air cleaner to see if that was it, and it drove around fine, put it back on and made sure it wasn't touching anything, and it worked great for about a day or two, then it started again. We then thought perhaps it was the fuel pump leaving excess fuel or something that's causing it to rev, so we replaced the fuel pump with one from IAP for Fiats, which is much noisier, and doesn't seem to have solved the problem.
At first the problem only happened when I'd been driving for awhile, and then was stuck in traffic or slowed down to stop. It didn't seem to happen at high speeds, only when I was trying to slow down, it felt like it was getting stuck at a certain speed on the way down, and as I downshifted, the RPMs would increase. Now it seems to be happening right when I start up, if the car has been sitting for awhile or takes a little bit longer to start up, it tries to rev. I thought perhaps there was excess fuel from trying to start the car that it's burning up, but I'm not really sure.
Whenever it does this, I can just tap the gas pedal and it'll usually go back down to normal RPMs.
I don't know if there's enough information here for anyone to suggest anything, but has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?
Engine revving on its own
Re: Engine revving on its own
what year is your car? Be assured, it's not caused by excess fuel lying somewhere.
Re: Engine revving on its own
disconnect the linkage from the carb to determine if the problem is the carb or linkage

Haha, that's one of the first things I thought about with the problem, all these Toyota folk are complaining, and I drive for half an hour in heavy traffic with the same problem and I can handle it.77SportSpider wrote:Are you sure it's a Fiat and not a Toyota?
Thanks for the suggestion Mark, I'll try that out.
