Rear shock replacement

Post by Specialk »

Hi everyone!

Just getting around to posting a few pics of my rear shock job. Decided to go for the KYBs vs performance shocks as I was looking for softer ride to navigate all the pot holes! Job went well, following instructions posted. Had I bit of problems with getting one of the springs back in. Ended up wrapping some string around a couple of coils and twisting. Not exactly high tech nor the safest technique but it worked! Now for the front!!!

Good job! Now, the fronts aren't as fun to do but it will give you the opportunity to go ahead and rebuild the front end if you haven't already done so.

Had a look at my front end this week-end. Didn't have the courage to start since I know it's going to be a difficult job and I should take the time to rebuild the rest of the suspension while I'm at it. I've got the control arm bushing but can somebody list the rest of the bushings needed??? Are they standard size??? Vicks doesn't seem to carry anything beyond the CA's. I know I've got to replace the sway bar bushings. Anything else? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Others will probably chime in with items I forget to mention, but you'll need to check and replace your control arm bushings, ball joints, check your tie rods and centerlink. While you have the front suspension off, you may want to consider replacing your soft brake lines and bleeding the brakes, repack the wheel bearings and remember to order the hub nut.

See image 0426:

I would recommend proper jack stand placement. Either under the crossmember, or further back on the frame rail. The one in the picture seams like only 1/4" of metal is on the jack stand. One good bump, or a hard tug on a wrench and it could come down on you.

Work safely.

My sentiments as well (that's far too dangerous). Also refer to your rear jacking location IMG_0299.

Look at this post for jacking points http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... ack+stands

Thanks for your replies. Just wanted to give you an update......I swapped out the front shocks with no real issues except that I had a lot of problems getting to the top left nut. Took a while but used 2 wrenches, the 17 mm to hold the bolt and the other to turn the nut (the top of the shock). Hope to do the rest once the weather starts getting not so nice.

Cheers!
