One thing, one more dime, you absolutely HAVE to do is cut the ridge out of the cylinder. In a perfect world you would have done it before you pushed the pistons out. If you put new rings on now, the top ring with it's nice square edge will bang up against that ridge and damage the ring land. Methinks some rental shops have em to rent.
Surface head, to just surface it without checking it good first is a waste of good metal. Is critical that you don't shave too much off the head. Left to their own, most machine shops want to make money and just surface EVERYTHING.
Looking forward to hearing more,
Keith

Re: Engine miss diag, never ending story
Thanks, I did the ole fingernail test then clean up a section with scotch bright pad and really no ridge there but a small increase. No catching on fingernail so Ill just wipe the cylinders with the scotch bright and call it good. Yeah I only want the minimum to be taken off the head, it needs it due to being banged up by the foreign object and I didnt like the way the gasket looked between 3/4 cylinders around the seal ring. Should be back to running like a top by next weekend maybe if parts come through.

Re: Engine miss diag, never ending story
Well it would have been running this weekend but improper torque values caused a rod bolt to strectch and not tighten. Ill be sure to correct that pos IAP shop manual in case someone else ever uses it. I think Ill go 38 lbs when the new bolts come in with some blue loctite and call it good.
Now I am wondering if I should get new head bolts? Is there a measurement available to check for stretch? $80.00 for a set of head bolts could be spent on some gas money to driver her :
The head got a valve grind and light surface. All the intake lobes were spot in at .017 and I think one at .016. The exhaust was all off and was able to get one at .019 moving shims around. I ordered 3 more new ones based on my calcs and would have been correct if the were true to size! The 345 was 346 so I sit at .018 for 3 of the other valves. Ill recheck after she has some miles on her.
4 things that I hate doing on a fiat
Removing starter
Install clutch cables
Trying to put in new trans fluid.... especially when the fill plug wont come out
Getting that darn driveline spline to fine its hole!

Re: Engine miss diag, never ending story
On my things I hate doing list I should :
Make and sell an access panel kit that you could fill the trans from the passenger compartment
Make stud kit for starter.
Grind down the darn collars so the cable can go on the pedal in 10 minutes not over and hour, cuss words and chewed up hands. What the heck is that thing for anyways it bolts to the shift fork with its own spring anyways and as long as the ears on the pedal are I dont see it coming out. I was about 1 minute away from modifying my cable when it finally went in.
Get rid of the damn doughnut and have a real driveshaft!
Ok vent over

Yea, I know where you're comming from. I'm not a mechanic and have fixed and learned as I go with plenty of times doing things twice. But I sure get a sence of satisfaction when done and even more so when I drive it and it all stays together
I do love the post installation fluid consumption as well
Well done , now time to enjoy

Re: Engine miss diag, never ending story
Well less progress as I got the new rod bolts and nuts, finshed the rings and bearings then decided to check the replacement oil pan gasket mid west had sent be to replace the wrong off set hole one. Well it didnt line up and seems too short? Maybe for the 1400???
To top it off I went to see how it fit on my replacement oil pan and found that I got the wrong pan, off set holes on it too...Looks like another weekend down the tubes as far as getting this engine back in.
