Oil Drain Plug size and thread

Post by dacfan »

Hi Spideratarians,
12 mm inlet on oil drain plug on my '74 is absolutely mutilated by POs. Looks like someone has used every tool they could find to get the plug out in the past. I am going to try to gently tap a 1/2 inch hex key into it and hopefully get the plug off. If not, it's off to my uncle's machine shop so he can figure out what to do. My question is: What is the "od" size and thread of the plug? I want to get one locally so I'll have it on hand when I pull the old one out. I want to get one with a socket head so it will be easier from now on. I'm guessing about 17mmx1.5 thread, but I could be totally wrong. Anyone know?
If it comes down to it, I guess I could sump the oil out through the dipstick hole but I don't want to.
Thanks

IAP sells a magnetic one that can be used with a socket wrench. Give them a call and they will give you a thread size

it takes a 12mm allen wrench, i do not recomend drain plugs that have wrench flats on them, as they stick down lower than the pan and are prone to getting ripped out if the car bottoms out, which is very possable, look at the bottom of your oil pan, see if it has any road rash on it now.

Very good point. I have one and it sticks out but I never thought it.

Next oil change I go back to the flat type.

if you want a magnet on your oil plug, use one from a transmission drain plug. but if there is metal in your oil pan, its too late anyway

I needed a new one and none of my local parts stores had one. I finally bought one from my local Dodge dealer, for a Cummins turbo diesel!
