My timing belt change

Post by dulcimerbob »

Tore into my 76 yesterday to change the timing belt. I took the cover off and there was only one pointer to line up the cam pullies. Seems that the smog pump pully and the left cam pully are one and the same . The timing marks are on the back of the pulley and cast on the cam cover body. Mechanic at Vick's told me that. So I got everything lined up and pulled the old belt . Didn't have to remove any pullies just the alt drive belt. I checked the tensioner bearing and it was toast and of course I didn't have one so now the Titanic is sitting waiting for parts. Take my advice and get one before you start. Optimism on an old car doesn't always work. I may change the water pump . I do have one of those waitng for me at Oreilly's . Hope this will help some other poor misguided Fiat fool. :D Thanks for all the help from this board for getting me this far.

Based on my experience, I'd strongly recommend getting new bolts for the water pump. 30+ year old bolts don't take to tightening very well. One of mine broke off in the block causing all kinds of angst and some very bad language that even offended my dog!
