transmission
transmission
I drove my 76 for the first time today putting .7 miles on it. Just a trip up the street and back. My transmission isnt quite right. First, Second and third have what seems to have a bad sound not grinding just a kinda constant lower pitched whine but not a real high pitched whine. Third isnt as bad as first or second. Now ive never driven one of these cars before today and i wouldnt know what they are supposed to sound like in good running condition. But I have changed the rear end and transmission fuid before doing anything. I used red line gl 1 for the transmission and red line ? cant remember for the rear end.

Re: transmission
most likely the small needle bearing between 4th and the mainshaft, of one of the layshaft bearings is dry or bad, when in 4th gear all the power goes thru the mainshaft bypassing the layshaft. hence why its quiet in 4th. of course this is puerly speculation without dissasembly or even hearing or driving the car. next question is all of the factory insulation on the transmission tunnel? the gearbox isnt noisy in general, but un insulated some whine may be heard. how loud is it? just some ideas. hope this helps. gl1 is fine
