Another thermostat thread...lol

Post by Fiat88 »

Like many others I'm having trouble with the coolong system. My fan isn't kicking on since the savara t-stat doesn't seem to be opening. The lower rad hose stays cool even as the temp on the guage creeps pass the 190 mark. I'm pretty sure the system is full, as I filled the system through the choke hoses, radiator, and squeezed the hoses to get air out. I'm wondering if the t-stat has seen enough and called it quits...maybe but I did check it about a month and half ago it it opened up in boiling water after awhile.

I haven't took the car for a ride on the road since I'm waiting to get plates but last summer when i was driving it the fan did kick on, so maybe it's not getting hot enough? One other thing I want to mention is that when I connected the choke hoses together which went to the stock carb(installed a DFEV carb) I used a plastic vacuum connector, which has smaller openings then the hoses do. Could this be causing the trouble by not letting enough coolant by? Thx

your hose connector is not the problem. When you filled the system through those hoses, did you have the radiator cap in place and the choke hose held up as the high point?
Only two situations will cause the t stat not to open; faulty stat or air in the system

Your choke hose size is not the issue. No worries there. Are you sure the closed when cold port of the thermostat is facing the lower radiator hose? If so, and you're 100% sure you got the air out of the coolant system, then a faulty thermostat will be your problem.

I know it's ugly, but install a coolant system flush T into your heater hose and fill and burp the system from there. It's 100% sure and only about $5. Well worth it to never have trouble again.

While we are on the subject of refilling the cooling system, let me remind you to open the heater valve first, to be sure there is coolant there also.
