Hesitation/Loss of Power

Post by courtenay »

80 Fi - changed the timing belt a few weeks ago. Couple of hundred kilometers of trouble free driving, including a 70 km run yesterday afternoon.
Drove about 10 Kms this morning. Stopped. When restarted, ran fine for a minute or so, then quit. restarted right away, but rough. Revved a couple of times and got rolling, but very rough at low speed. Once up to speed (2nd gear and up - 3000 rpm), ran smooth. When I let off the gas to gear down, big hesitation - almost choking. Hadto nurse the gas pedal to keep it running, but once back into the gas, it ran smooth.
Any ideas???

How do you check for a sticking AFM? Or an intake air leak?

I bought a new fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator and put them on the bench beside the car. Before installing them, I thought I'd take the car for a bit of a run. It ran perfectly through the half hour I was out. No hesitation or loss of power. Smooth as silk through the entire power range. I guess the threat of having new parts installed (by me) scared the bugs out of the little devil. Go figure...

That is good news, now you can start your collection of spare parts... an addition to the addition?

On another note, perhaps there was some bad gas? The wild temp fluctuations we've had here the past month or so may have led to water in the tank at the station?

Long time ago, a fellow mentioned the stations that are busy/high turnover usually won't have an issue but the small independants that get topped up less frequently could have more condensation issues. I'm not sure about this but seems logical. Anyone here in the fuel buis.?

So I bought a new fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator. Sat them on the bench beside the car which seemed to take care of the problem, for a week or so. Then it happened again - with a bit of a backfire and some smoke from under the hood. Long story short...when I changed my timing belt, I removed the AFM and air filter to get at the lower rad/fan mounting bolts. When I put it back together, when I connected the big hose (that's a techno-idiot's term) to the AFM, I didn't actually tighten the clamp around the mount. As a result, gobs of air (another tit) were intermiteintly upsetting the whole system.
Got that straightened out- with a screwdriver. Then found that the idle was all screwed up. I had adjusted it with the faulty AFM connection. The car would stall when warm and when I let my foot off the gas. SpiderJim came down from Campbell River and showed me how the AFM controls the fuel pump. I learned that if the idle gets low enough, there is no air flowing through the AFM and the stupid thing shuts off the fuel pump - hence the stall. A quick idle adjustment - and all is well.
Of course, I'm amassing a good supply of spare parts - and it doesn't seem to want to stop !@#$% raining up here so I can't get out to drive the !@#$%&'ing thing - but, hey - I fixed it...so that's good, right???

the rule of thumb is if you have a spare, the part will never fail. So having a good supply ensures trouble free driving :D
