Mark, I hope you're wrong.
Looking into the spark plug holes doesn't sound like it will be very helpful. but I'll see what I can see. I know there is no evidence of damage to the tips of the spark plugs after maybe 200 kms of driving after the timing belt work, when the sound was first heard.
