Replacing the radio and speakers

Post by Mark_vaughn »

Does anyone know if there was a center chanel speaker behind the little grill in the center console in front of the gear shift?

Has anyone tried putting on in there? Worth it?

on a '77?

nope

way way earlier, yes.

you have very little room at all behind that panel to begin with. putting in a single ~ 3" x 5" speaker would be worth what to you?

IMHO, unless you are cruisin at less than 40 mph most of the time, a Spider is not the best place to invest in stereo equipment.

Better money spent, and less installation headaches with a good ANSA dual tipped free flow muffler.......ahhh....the true sound if Italian Iron.

Got 4 speakers and a cd player for $65 bucks. Thats even cheaper than a new muffler.

It does look like there was a speaker there at one time. Was that the original speaker location perhaps? I think this is the original radio I am taking out and i know the map pockets were not the original speaker locations.

I had to cut the openings in the sheet metal behind the front kick panels on my wife's '78 in order to get speakers in that location.

By '79 or '80 this recess became stamped into the sheet metal at the factory.

So, yeah...on a '77 you are correct, the map pocket was not the original location. But, do you really wanna go mono with one speaker in the center location?

Some of us like to avoid the little voices in our head. :P I've got two Spiders that have different setups:
One has the speakers mounted in the rear quarters and the front mono speaker.
The other has speakers mounted in the map pockets with no mono speaker.
The first one sounds fine when not going highway speeds, but the air noise tends to drown out the radio. Without the single front speaker, I wouldn't be able to hear much of anything while driving. Of course, this car has an extremely loud dual carb setup, without the factory turtleback air cleaner.
On the second one, I can hear the radio fine, better than the first setup at highway speeds. It's dual carb with a turtleback, but in my opinion, this setup is better. It's actually on the outside of the map pocket so the speaker sits in the pocket itself. There isn't enough money in the world for me to cut into the sheet metal on a Fiat.

i have a spare set of front kick panels with speakers mounted in the map pockets like Denise describes.

they are yours for the taking, if you cover shipping expense. the speakers prolly should be replaced with something better or newer.
