No way to check visually. If it looks good it can still fail. Best bet is to change it at the first opportunity if you cannot determine the last time it was changed for certain. There is plenty of guidance on here for the project. Takes some time and knowledge but I found it quite interesting!
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!

I'll say it was interesting...a big tip - check out Wachuko's photos on changing the timing belt. They are extremely helpful in ensuring proper alignment of the camshafts and auxilary cam. Also - if you have to remove the lower belt cover, you have to remove the crankshaft pulley. It is not easy. I did it with an inch and a half socket (compliments of Spiderjim) and an impact wrench - and lots of patience (and a bit of liquid wrench). You will have to remove the lower grill and use a universal joint and extension with the socket. And don't put the lower belt cover back on. According to the many experts on this site, it's not necessary. And it means you won't have to take the crank pulley off next time you do the timing belt -- which will eliminate a whole lot of time to do the job. BTW, the rad's coming out as well. Have a bit tub under the car. The coolant doesn't necessarily flow nicely into a regular sized bucket...hits all kinds of suspension bits and flows all over the garage floor. Make sure you read the posts on refilling the cooling system so that the thing works after you get it all together.
All in all quite the job for a newbie - but having done it, albeit with a few problems completely unrelated to the timing belt change - I can say it's not too hard a project. Can't emphasize enough the value of Jamies cam alignment photos!!!
Good luck!!!
