Aftermarket cooling fan buying help...

I'm kind of leaning towards an aftermarket fan set-up even though the stock fan works and I just refinished it by sanding the fan shroud to bare metal, primed and painted it with silver engine paint. Came out nice but it's kind of bulky.

I've read old threads about aftermarket ones but still not sure what kind I should get? What brand? Size?My cars a '79 with an auto-trans, the thing is though the PO put a manual trans. radiator in and added a trans oil intercooler in front of the radiator, so maybe a more modern fan would be better to get more air flow.

As of now, I have the rad out and intercooler but I'm gonna start putting that stuff back in this weekend coming up, so trying to figure out what set-up would be good.

Also, could I make the stock rad fan switch(bottom of rad) work with an aftermarket fan? THx for any input.

The stock fan switch works fine, just make sure your aftermarket fan has suffcient cfm, I think some cheapies are overated.

So, what size spal fan will give me more clearence from the water pump pulley? The original type, is it a puller or pusher type? THx.

If its behind the radiator next to the engine its a puller
If its in front of the radiator towards the bumper its a pusher.
I don't know the CFM off hand.

I'm not positive on the more clearance part, but do know that a 14" fan fits just fine. And a 14" fan thats completely on the cooling surface of a radiator vs. the stock fan that part of is on the top rad. tank well you can imagine how much better that is.

Key note on all fans after about 30 mph you are pushing in more air than the puller fan can pull, so at 30 mph pretty much all fan don't do anything. They will however stay running alot of the time.
