Emissions stuff
Emissions stuff
I'm not sure if this has been covered already. I want to remove all the emissions stuff from my 78'. Will I have problems with the carb and tuning or is it a simple task? the reason that I want to remove is the pump is seized up and I dont want to buy a new one plus I heard the performance is a little better. Plus I'm not sure the laws in PA but I think it is emissions exempt so if all the stuff is gone it would look better than the pump sitting there on the side of the engine with no belt. Any advice on this situation will be appreciated. Also my distributor has dual points I have read that it is good to switch to single points do you just leave one set of points out or is there other things that need to be changed?
Re: Emissions stuff
1. take v-belt off pump
2. check local laws
3. remove equipment and plug the remaining holes to your heart's content
International Auto has a tutorial in their tech section on how to switch to single points. http://www.international-auto.com
not advocating or endorsing the swap, just know that it has been done enough to warrant a tech article.
in removing the emission equipment, i'd recommend keeping the charcoal canister. its removal does nothing to improve performance, and its absense can lead to gasoline odors.
also, if you remove the air pump from the engine, be sure NOT to remove the studs into the crankcase. at least one of those studs passes through an oil passage way. I use the stud to hook on an extra ground strap, which tends to solve future electrical woes.

Re: Emissions stuff
There's a thread about electronic ignition conversion that's just a few days old. You can read up on your points options there.
Your carburetor will need to be adjusted once the emissions items are removed. The jetting and emulsion tubes were a poor combination. It will still be drivable as it is, but don't expect to be impressed. The best bet is to get a 34DMSA from a 74, or a replacement DFEV from one of the vendors.
If you're working over your distributor along with the emissions, you should wait to adjust the carburetor until that is ironed out as well.

Re: Emissions stuff
Checked PA laws and all the emissions stuff has to be on there like it was from the factory. Soooo the bug question is does any one have a smog pump for a 1978 that they want to sell cheap the one I have is seized and I cant even get the case apart to gut it so it will have to be replaced with something I just don't want to buy a new one for $80
Re: Emissions stuff
Its really not a smog pump, but more of an air pump to cool off your exhaust valve. It really does nothing for emissions. Take that bad boy off.
Re: Emissions stuff
That is not quite right. It is an air pump, but not used to cool anything. By introducing oxygen into the exhaust port, any unburned fuel finishes burning. Introduction of oxygen also promotes emission reduction in the catalyst. If you don't believe it reduces emissions, put a CO probe in the tailpipe and do a comparison of CO readings with and without the pump workingIts really not a smog pump, but more of an air pump to cool off your exhaust valve. Glad i live in the land of the free, no emissions laws or equipment requirements her in sunny fla! but while i lived in ga, where there is a emissions inspection , the catalist had to be in place, but the tailpipe emissions only had to meet certain standards for the model year. and we never had any problems making fiats pass with no smog equipment on the motor. no egr and no air pump

Re: Emissions stuff
swapping to a DFEV will defeat any emissions equipment supplied by the factory carburetor, or supporting the factory carburetor.
the DFEV has basically three ports
1. air in
2. fuel in
3. vacuum advance
plus an electric choke.
i challenge your Pennsylvania law enforcement. Do they actually TEST and INSPECT the engine? does it truly reach that far back in the model years?

Re: Emissions stuff
we've set up several cars with DFEV carbs to pass smog checks in So Cal, it's not a problem if you have any idea what you're doing
Re: Emissions stuff
Unfortunately in the county in PA I live they dont test emissions but they check that all the equipment is there and will fail you if stuff is missing. I really really didnt want to spend the money on a new one just get a used one that spins since the one that is on my car dose not spin therefore I cant put the belt on it for inspection. New is $90 I was hoping someone would have one cheap so I can get this car on the road.

I have a '78 that I have been considering removing the smog pump from. If you needed it, I could go take it off and sell it to you. The catch is that I am in Wisconsin, so I am not sure what shipping costs would be.
Do you still need a pump?
