Re: 79-2000- constant clicking
just pull the head at this point, aparently the stud or nut is lodged in the head or piston. i have seen them do this but not hurt things too badly. pull the head and inspect

Does it make sense to pull the carb and hang it to the side, or just pull the head with carb/intake, and exhaust?
Anyone have experience with the woodruff key on the crank shearing? I guess if it jumped time that much, it would not run so smoothly.
It's probably that damn nut/stud from the carb!!

Mark,
10 bolts in the head? Cams can stay in place right?
Nothing hidden under them I need to unbolt?

The heads come off easy, no need to touch the cams or anything like that. Disconnect the hoses and wires, unbolt the exhaust pipe and take out the head bolts.minimike wrote:Mark,

Disconnect the battery first. Drain the coolant from the block. It would help to pull the cam covers and suck the oil out of the cam towers with a syringe. These steps help to minimize the mess from spilled oil and coolant. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe, and disconnect and label all hoses, cables, and wires to the head / distributor / carburetor. Take pictures. Remove the 10 head bolts. The head is easy to lift out with 2 people, one on each side. There are 2 dowel pins between the head and block -- be careful not to lose these (they may be stuck in the head gasket, which is good). Tell us what you find. Pictures are even better.

Good tip on the oil in the cam covers. Weather is gonna be excellent for the next 2 days. I should have it off with pix, and will post the hidden causes. Thank you guys.

Re: 79-2000- constant clicking
Hi all. thanks to all. I got the head off and have pix on photobucket: http://s934.photobucket.com/albums/ad18 ... pix_album/
I think that's the addy.
So it appears that each cyl ate a piece of metal save #1. the head it knackered but he valves look OK. the pistons are toast as
far as I'm concerned. Damage I think in # 2 very close to the edge of the piston. The block has not a score on the cylinders. Amazing. I could jack it up pull the pistons out and put in new pistons and a head, but this lump I believe will sit idle while
I try to turn the donor engine. It won't spin on the starter. Been sitting too long. Kero in the cylinders, and a wrench on the crank. Enjoy the pix. I'd be drowning in my beer if I drank anymore. I don't drink any less either. So that's the story. Not an exhaust leak, Not a spun bearing. Nice to see that the pistons are relieved for valve freewheeling should the timing belt ever let loose. SoCal, I'll be talking to you about what I need to put back in so I can lose some of the plumbing. Meanwhile if anyone
has a spare head and a set of 2000 pistons, I might be interested.
If someone can walk me through actually posting my pix into this thread, I'll do it.

Re: 79-2000- constant clicking
even #1 got dinged a few times I don't think I've ever seen a motor that had every cylinder banged up. Maybe a vandal poured a handful of shot down the carb

Re: 79-2000- constant clicking
It's quite amazing that only 2 studs and nuts were missing from the perimeter of the carb. It appears that some of the studs
are half the size in length, but every cyl has damage. Logically that would mean one nut in each of 2 cyls, and one stud in each of the other 2 cyls. What are the odds that the four pieces would divide into each cyl?
I'll give a call to the PO next week sometime and ask him if he pissed off anyone re: the car.

Re: 79-2000- constant clicking
You can see a piece of the stud stuck to the head on cyl #4. I've seen ONE bolt do damage to three different cylinders before. As the bolt breaks apart, some of the pieces make it back through the intake valve and into other cylinders.SLOSpider wrote:
