Hello from Whitby, Ontario

Post by asoces »

Just got a 1979 Spider! Should be on the road by tomorrow - can't wait to cruise around. Unfortunately, my turn signals, brake, hazard and reverse lights all just stopped working, so I have to locate a source for those weird fuses near my area so I can start the troubleshooting process. :(

Maybe I can just use hand signals for the time being, and still get out driving and enjoying the nice weather. :)

Welcome to the forum. The fuses are available at CTC, Partsource, NAPA, etc. Enjoy!

Thanks, guys.

The unhelpfull salesperson at CTC told me they couldn't get those fuses, so I (incorrectly) assumed they were hard to get - thanks for the info.

I bought some from my local CanTire just weeks ago... but it looked like discontinued stuff. Check Napa, I'm sure they still provide.
Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil, we have decided to turn off the light at the end of the tunnel. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Welcome to the forum. Not sure where Whitby is,but I'd guess near the lake. 68, dad bought an albacore sailboat from there.(whitby boat works)
Check craigs list and see if anyone in the area is parting a car, they might have a few fuses to hold you over.
Gonna have to get dialed in with the pics... Any mods to the car? going to?

Mysteriously, the lights all started working the next day, and have been fine since. I think I'll re-do all the grounds and do the brown wire fix, too - just to be safe.

I've been out cruising around in the nice weather, just enjoying the car, and as I become more familiar with it, my list of things to do keeps getting longer and longer - LOL. Oh, well - I guess that's all part of the fun.

The only mods on the car are a roll bar and a little rectangular chrome air filter. It has a really crappy looking rusty exhaust and muffler system that is kind of ruining it's image, but there are more important things that need $$$ and attention right now.

Hi asoces, welcome to the forum. It may be a good idea to take all the fuses out, clean the terminals on the fuse panel, crimp them slightly and reinstall the fuses. It sounds like you're not getting good consistent contact on the fuses.
Also, the GBC fuses are funny buggers, they can look good and be bad.

Hey Asoces!

Were you at the Keg in Oshawa about a month ago? I was driving by in my truck and saw a couple getting out of a red spider ... Thought I was the only one around! I recently picked up a yellow 78 and live in Whitby as well. Maybe I'll see you driving around again. Have fun with your new car.

Hi, and welcome to the Fiat world! We're all a little "special" around here, but it's a fun place to be.
The guy at my parts store told me that our fuses are the same ones that were used in VW bugs. (The old air-cooled ones) They seem to be fairly common around here.

Hi Mrsparkle!

I haven't been to the Keg lately, but my Spider is beige anyway. Seems like there are at least three of us in the area! We should meet up up sometime and compare notes/swap tips, etc. :-)

Hi billstyer,

Thanks for the advice on the fuses - surprisingly, the Crappy Tire in Whitby carries them right on the shelf.

As a follow up to my electrical problems, I discovered that my flasher unit had been crushed/jammed into the holder under the dash, and was a bit flaky. I haven't had any electrical glitches since that has been sorted out, but now I have to figure out why my car groans and creaks like an old man all the time - hehehe.

Asoces,

I'll look for you driving around town! I have a store at the mall so mine is sometimes parked near the Henry's Camera store entrance (on nice days), she's bright yellow, you can't miss her ...

billstyer prolly doesn't know about the institution that is Crappy Tire being from the US of A ... hehe, it's the 'everything' store up here in Canada with a very loose focus on automotive parts/supply ... I saw them selling groceries at the one in Lindsay! Oh, Crappy Tire = Canadian Tire

Believe it or not, I do know about Canadian Tire. My ex was from the Yukon. Long, sad story, but we did spend a fair amount of time in YT, AB, & SK. No wonder Canadians love it. Absolutely beautiful! - And not nearly as crowded as the nice places in the US. One of these days, I would love to take my "real wife" and the Fiat up there on vacation. She would probably never want to come back.
