I can smell a small amount of smoke once in a while...

I get very little smoke sometimes when it is really hot outside, I think it is coming somewhere from before the distributor area. I changed the distributor seals and that does not leak anymore. I have been told it might be coming from the exhaust manifold somewhere but I can't seem to pinpoint it. Again, it is not that big of a leak, maybe a drop once in a while. When stopped at a red light I can see a small amount of smoke coming up from the back area of the hood
Has anyone had a similar problem and how did you find leak?

If you pressure-wash the engine bay, you'll be able to pinpoint where the leak originates. Some of the studs attaching the exhaust manifold project into the oil galley and can leak, particularly if not properly installed with sealant.

My engine is clean... I can't see the exhaust manifold studs because of the heat shield which seems to be attached by rusty nuts that might brake if I attempt to remove them. As far as I can see, I do not see an oil mess anywhere....

there are several areas that leak in the rear corner; cam housing, exhaust studs, cylinder head, cam rear cover.

Yes it is very common for the top two exhaust manifold studs to leak. As it was said before they go into the oil galley. Pull them and put some RTV on the threads that go into the head. Let the studs sit for 24 hours before restarting the motor.

Other things can be that the cam tower gasket is blown. Which is very common on Fiat 2000 Spiders.

When I smell smoke, I peek around... usually someone in a "roofed car" has a window open and is smoking...

In the Fiasco, I used to get a little oil drip that would fall on to the exhaust pipe under the engine, and that would smoke a little.
