FI Poor idle when 1st start

Post by 2ndwind »

Just got my car roadworthy today. When cold or restarting after 10-15 min, will not hold idle. Idles down to 300-600rpm and/or quits. Can keep it going with throttle just fine. Once engine warms up for 1-3 mins, runs and idles beautifully. can't tell you engine temp 'cause the gauge quit earlier this week (new temp sender though). I have a new (rebuilt) AFM and Mark's rebuilt auxiliary air regulator. Any ideas? It also smells like it is burning a little rich even after warmed up. But I am not positive of this.

How did you set the idle? Warm the engine and seat the brass idle speed screw on the throttle body, then loosen the nut on the accelerator linkage stop screw and adjust the idle with it to about 800 RPM, tighten the nut to lock the screw, then use the brass idle screw to set the idle at about 900. Before doing this, you might want to remove the idle speed adjustment screw and clean it out with carb spray, and also remove the rubber air intake hose and clean the inside of the throttle body and throttle plate good to avoid sticking.

I know it is. That's why I gave you the procedure on how to set idle on a fuel injected engine.

Jeff, Thanks. I'm sorry, to a noob it sounded like a carb procedure. Should I tinker with the idle if it already idles at 900 to 950 when warmed after a minute or two?

A couple of things to look for would be the temp sensor in the coolant T. (It needs to be functioning correctly for the engine to run well across the temp range), also an outside chace it could be a vacuum leak that seals off after heat has caused expansion.
