Car pulles to the right.

Post by Tobi »

I replaced the rotors the calipers and the master cylinder two years ago and the brakes worked perfect.
Last week I replaced the rear end, got the car back on the road and it all worked fine.
Then I replaced the starter (twice and I have to do it again), test drove it and now it pulls to the right when I go down the road. It pulls much harder to the right when I step on the brake.
The right front wheel blocks when I push them hard.
Also, how to find out if my cold start valve (1981 FI) is broken or maybe just a broken wire? The motor only runs with 400 turns/min for the first to minutes when cold and 800 when warm. Before I worked on the starter it was doing 800 turns when cold and 1200 when warm.
Every time I work on that car I fix one thing and two things brake.
My dream is that one day I will make progress on the car or have the guts to admit my failure and trade it for a nice working MR2.
For now I hope one of you guy's or gal's can help me with that progress thing.
Thanks,
Tobi

mr2 = fiat wanna be! :D , now the left front brake most likely has a problem. of course always do brake repairs on both sides at the same time. bleed them first and test, see if that helps, if not look to see if the wear is greater on the friction material on the right as opposed to the left. if so rebuild the calipers and replace the hoses.

hope this helps

Don't overlook worn bushings. They will cause the same issue.

agreed worn bushings, also almost forgot, check the front suspension crossmember, make sure all the lower control arm mounting points are intact, crossmember failure is sudden , generally from impact, then the broken parts wear until ...ooops. look at the bolts where the lower arms attach, make sure there are no cracks or breakages

Thank you guy's! I love the forum.
How about the lower, left bushings? I think I will replace the whole arm. I did not think it could be the brakes.
The bad thing is that I have to deal with that damn Adco bar again. I had to customize that a lot to make it work.
Here is a link to a photo of the bushing http://www.flickr.com/photos/21443020@N06/4512880320/
and the bar http://www.flickr.com/photos/21443020@N ... otostream/
Thanks again,

Probably time for a full front-end rebuild. This cured my pulling issue (I initially thought (hoped) it was brakes, but replacing both front calipers, pads and discs with new units did not solve the problem.

Basically every Spider is due for a new front end by now if it hasn't been done in the past.

I just started considering redoing the whole front end. So I would replace all the control arm bushings.
What else could/should be done?

Replace the ball joints for sure! Do you like your stance? Can lower it at this time with the springs out. Check Tie rod ends too.
