What parts should I order for my timing belt job?

By luck I met a neighbor by me who said he can help me replace my timing belt and seals. He works mainly on Honda civics.

What would you guys recommend me order as far as parts go, 1979 w/Automatic Trans.
1. Timing Belt- Need
2. V-belt for alternator- Got!

In addition to what you have, I've got a tensioner bearing and oil seals for the cams and crank. Depending on the age of your car, you might want to replace the water pump and rad hoses as well.
I'm a rookie at this stuff and I'm sure the more experienced vets on this site will have other recommendations as well

As mentioned, tensioner bearing if it has not been changed recently, seals for Crank, Cams, Aux shaft, ... and the gasket for the Coolant "T"... and clean as you go

You might just go a step further and get the gaskets for the crank and aux shaft housing. I just like getting the whole gasket set for $60 cause you will need them all at some point.

I did buy a Head Gasket Set from IAP a few months ago, this one http://www.international-auto.com/index ... sid=863219 so I have some of them, I just gotta figure out what didn't come with the set. I'll take a picture of what gaskets and seals I have from the set and maybe you guys can tell me what I'm missing?

Do the water pump while you're in there, it's an easy job. I only wish I did the timing belt when I did my water pump the first time I had all that stuff off the front of the motor, but I really wanted to get back up and running and was still a newbie. I've become a very big "while you're at it" kind of guy, especially as I see what a hack the PO was.

You might also want several band-aids of varying sizes and a bag of plasma, that one was a knuckle buster on my car at least. Now I have de-grimed the bulk of the motor making it a lot easier to work in there.

You will not need the rear crankshaft oil seal for this job.

Everything else sounds right, but you may or may not need 2 more gaskets depending on how you replace the oil seals. For the aux shaft and front crank seal, you can replace the seals two different ways.

Leave the cast aluminum seal carriers on the engine, pull the old seals out and tap new ones in. OR remove the seal carriers from the engine, then remove and replace the oil seals, and then reinstall the carriers with new gaskets.

If you remove the seal carriers then you will need those two gaskets. I don't know if IAP sells those individually or only available in the complete set, call them and ask. I know Vicks sells them individually Items 40-2316 and 40-2303. You can always make your own out of gasket material from the local auto parts store, if you don't want to have two separate orders, or just order it all from Vicks.

You might also want to get 2 seals for the camshafts. Same issue on replacement as with the crank seals - re- the gaskets.

Ok tomorrow, I want to start tackling this scary(4 me) project. All the parts arrived from IAP on wed. and have the weekend to work on this. I want to start replacing the front engine seals and putting the new water pump in but I'm not to confident on how to set the timing marks before removing the timing belt.

I'm really not sure where to start, but I know that the first thing is to set the timing but I'm a liitle confused on how to? Can you guys/gals explain thanks. I'm sure to have more questions and I'll take some pics so that you guys will know what I'm reffering too. Thanks.

No worries. It is easy. Just take your time, get some liquid white paper or something to make marks that you can see...

You will need a 1-1/2" socket to turn the crankshaft until you see the two marks aligned with the two holes in the camshaft pulleys, and the bottom timing mark from the crankshaft pulley. The camshaft pulleys holes along with the pointers from the base should be enough to let you know that everything has not moved, but, if you want to play it safe, mark with liquid paper (correction fluid) a reference on the camshafts and a reference point on the engine block. Do this for the camshafts, crankshaft pulley and auxiliary pulley (this is the one that is critical...)

Best to remove the radiator because you will need to remove the crankshaft pulley to swap belts (unless you are lucky enough to not have all the metal covers).

It is late and I have a few glasses of wine on me... let me get up early and post a few photos of when I did mine and a few of the engine in the engine stand so you get a better idea of what you will find.
