38 DGAS 4A2 Compatibility with '78 1.8?

Post by ericsky »

I'm curious if a 38 DGAS 4A2 can be jetted and set up to give worth while performance on a stock '78 with a 4-2-1 exhaust? I'm guessing it's too big as well as having simultaneous barrel opening instead of progressive. I understand that the proper 34 or 32 36 would be common choice options but have access to a 38 DGAS. Thanks for all feedback!

I'm pretty sure it will work, you just need to find the right jetting and slowly get into the pedal and don't stomp on it or it will bog down.

There are a few guys running around with synchronous carbs with good results. They will give good power, and provide a feeling close to dual carbs without actually going to dual carbs. I got a 40mm DCNF, also synchronous that I'm going to try...some day.

Mark may provide some jetting info, I think he's set a few of these up on spiders.

Thanks for the reply info! I was hoping for a bit more feedback but it's Easter. I found more info including this thread from late last year: http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... arb#p60526 and though this configuration should work and even offer some benefits its obviously not conventional enough as my first mod, especially since my new 16-year-old female driver will use it and there seems to be pilot management issues. I have an '82 turbo and am ambitously thinking to equal performance a bit. It's better I keep looking for a 34 ADF or 32 36. However, any more feedback is appreciated. I'll make more inquiries tomorrow though just to step up my learning curve. Thanks again!

I've put 3 on those on Spiders, two out of the three owners really liked them. There is a short learning curve on how to drive them. As Matt wrote, you can't just tromp the pedal down from a start. But who drives like that anyway? The carbs have an amazing top end though. The 3 cars I've put them on have all had my headers though, which also makes a huge difference. I'm not sure how it will work with stock exhaust.
