Fuel filler hose cracks after 3000 miles

Post by velozi »

Some months ago my car began smelling like fuel. Found my fill elbow hose was old and cracked. Got one at IAP and changed it.

Last week, was smell and fuel on my driveway. Looked under car and found the hose cracked.

Any ideas? Maybe a bad hose or too much pressure?

When I take out the gas cap there is a lot of pressure built up.

What year is your car? If you have a lot of pressure it may be the three way valve in the trunk that is malfunctioning, but I find it hard to believe that would wipe out your fuel filler hose. When mine started leaking, the vendors I check with didn't have one so I started walking under vehicles at the dealership I worked at. I found one with the same diameter and bend under a GMC Suburban. I was able to buy the hose and cut it in half so I'd have two for the Fiat.

It's a 76 so I just need the angled elbow.

Please give me more details on the compatible Suburban hose. What year and engine is it for.

IAP and Vicks want $25-30 for that hose which I think its a lot.

go to your local "Hose & Rubber Supply" or similar: They had what I needed for around $5.

And they're knowledgeable enough to know that you need a hose that can be immersed in fuel constantly! Don't make the mistake of thinking any rubber will do!

It had to be between 99 and 2003 1500 Suburban since it's been at least 7 years since I replaced mine. The thing cost me around $65 but it was long enough with the right bends to cut it in half and have two.

So here is the solution to my dilema. The first replacement filler hose I got from IAP had very thin walls. Also, I remember it being thicker on one side and very thin on the other one. In general, bad quality.

I searched all over for a replacement so I can just replace it and forget it for a decade. Found one made by Gates that is perfect for it. Gates #24712 is a 2" ID and 45 degree angle. Very think and high quality. Look around because prices are all over the place. NAPA $34, OReilly $23 and a local parts place for $19.
