Re: Race motor
Thanks for the links everybody i like the challange of a motor that isnt used for tuning at this level how hard is a 16v head to find or is it that they are just really expensive?

Hey check out this site also, http://forum.abarth-gmr.be/ good info on the Abarth 124s and 131 cars. Yep, hard to find and really expensive!

Re: Race motor
My opinion is you should build a turbo car. For drifting you just need a bit of torque, not hp. The 16v heads are nice (I have 2 of them in my shop) but they excel in making hp high in the rev range. They also require extensive modifications to the chassis to fit, along with custom manifolds because they were never fitted longitudinally in a car.
8v turbo will make plenty of power for you, and cheaply. The problem then becomes getting it to the wheels. You'll need a 131 transmission, a one piece driveshaft, and a better differential. LSD is not worth it, even any LSD you buy you'll want to modify to have a higher lockup. A welded diff will be just fine. The weak link on these things though are the ring and pinion themselves, so it doesn't really matter what you bolt them to, they don't hold up to much. Grafting in a different rear axle really isn't too difficult..
I would also put a steering rack in the car as the OEM parts are not the best and far from quick.
As for cage building, chromoly is a total waste of money unless you temper all the welds afterward. Standard 1020 DOM will suit you just fine.
Anyway, these are just a few things I picked up while building a Miata drifter with a friend of mine. It sure is a lot of fun just as long as you can keep feeding it rubber

Re: Race motor
Go you think it would be cheaper/easier to just swap in a rotary. Thanks for the info i heard somebody was using 300zx irs how hard would that be?
Re: Race motor
I really think the 8v turbo is the best option. A motor swap is much more work and a 12A or 13B rotary doesn't make a whole lot more power. There are lots of parts to make too like custom motor and transmission mounts, exhaust manifolds, coolant tubing, and you still have to wire the whole thing up.
IRS is also more work than its worth IMO. Installing it would be a challenge but not impossible. The thing to remember is that the suspension mounting points on the spider are already relatively weak but will work without reinforcement if you don't have to time to mess with it. The best solution is to use your cage to tie in and reinforce these points. If you did IRS, the mounting points will be completely different, and would require the mounting points to be reinforced. I'd also do some reinforcement of the shock towers, again it should be part of the cage.

Re: Race motor
Ok i have a vovle t3 turbo on my workbench and im going for a carbed turbo 8v and on top of that all controls are going to be analog so thats going to be fun to set up. I just hate electronics its one more thing to go wrong.Im stickingto stock axel now and im reinforcing the chassis for rally as it turns out tuning for a rally car is extremely close to a drift car. Another question has anyone experimented with nitrous i know that i cant set up the system to only come on when the gas is WOT so could this be a good set up as long as i dont over spray and blow the motor. It shouldnt be really hard on the motor as long as i dont over do it.
Re: Race motor
if you go nitro. just dont over do it like you say. But I'd probably go through the hassle and have the block/head O ringed because the pressure will more than likely blow the gasket. U should seriously use O ring and copper gasket if your gonna turbo and/or nitro. Dont forget to use Total Seal rings. They have an exceptional website that will explain everything about rings, gaps, nitro, meth, turbo, blower, gapless, etc. http://www.totalseal.com
Re: Race motor
If you put a turbo over the top of your carbs, Its been 20 or so years that i have done that. I don't quite remember what you need to do. But you might need to have your throttle shaft O ringed because of blow by. I think you need to use a stronger float, something about it crushing or something. The rest escapes me, its been so long. Just browse through one of those "how to turbo" books and make sure it has a carb section.

Not sure how nitrous will help a drift car as a shot of nitrous gives a temporary boost in power. I think the advice on turbo charging is the best option.DriftFiat wrote:Another question has anyone experimented with nitrous i know that i cant set up the system to only come on when the gas is WOT so could this be a good set up as long as i dont over spray and blow the motor.
Does anyone know of any professional drift setup with nitrous:?:
DriftFiat, have you done any drifting on a track?

Re: Race motor
Would a supercharger be better than a turbo. More linear power delivery than a turbo... only problem is that I am not aware of any available superchargers for these cars..

Re: Race motor
Linear power delivery and low end torque... agreed. You can use a low pressure turbo on a high(er) compression engine to minimize (almost eliminate) turbo lag. Smooth throttle application is key in drifting and once your turbo is spooled up, you're good to go.
