Stall when put into gear '82 FI
Stall when put into gear '82 FI
When i put the car into gear it idles rough and will stall unless I give it gas and get it going. When I come to a stop it will also idle rough and get increasingly rougher until it stalls... I am new to being a Fiat owner and would appreciate any help people can offer....
Thanks

I assume this is an automatic? More info please like have you checked basics like timing, fuel pressure, etc. Also, more details about how it runs off idle through the gears and was it running ok and just started doing this?

if it is an a/t and wants to "creep", you may have a bad torque convertor?

When you press on the brake pedal do you hear a sucking sound in the cabin near the brake pedal? If it is idleing and you press the brake does it run rough? Both of those symptoms would indicate a bad brake booster diaphram.
Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
sounds like a vacuum leak to me; booster or otherwise
Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
I am new to Fiats and I just got the car a few weeks ago. The car is an AT. When I put the car into gear after a cold start it will stall if I put it into gear and do not give it some gas. After the car has warmed up a bit it seems to run ok - unless I am at a stop for a LONG period of time, then it might stall. The car seems to shift OK - not great but I don't think these AT's EVER ran very well... In park it idles at about 15K, and in gear it idles at about 8-9K.
Being new I have no idea where to start... any suggestions would be appreciated.

As Trey, Matt, and Mark have suggested, you need to look for a vacuum leak first off. Two things, air related, are critical for our FI engines: vacuum leaks, and leaks on the air intake side. Besides checking your brake booster, also check that you don't have a blown diaphragm on the vacuum advance module, or cracked vacuum line(s). Pay particular attention to the ends of vacuum lines where they attach to a nipple, that's where you'd commonly get splitting.
If you can't hear a sucking sound from your brake booster, disconnect the large vacuum line going to it and plug it, see if it improves things. Check your vacuum advance module by sucking on the hose going to it, watch to see if the arm going into the bottom of the distributor moves, if it doesn't, you have a blown diaphragm, and that's a vacuum leak.
Check these things and let us know if you found the problem.

Finally had time to work on the car. There was no sucking sound from the booster. When I sucked on the Vacuum Advance Module hose there was NO movement from the arm going into the Distributor. Can the VAM be fixed or does it need to be replaced? If so are there any tricks to doing it? As always - any help would be GREAT...

No, they can't be fixed. You'd have to replace it, but you'll find that usually the replacements last less than a year. The units being supplied now don't have a diaphragm that will hold up long against the heat of the exhaust manifold. I have been running for a couple of years now without one and neither I or anyone else who drives my car can feel any decrease in perfomance. Until you get a replacement, or as a permanent bypass, plug the hose going to it from the intake manifold and you'll get rid of that source of vacuum leak.

only the end from the manifold. Your mechanical advance can be modified for more advance to compensate for the loss of the vacuum advance
Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
I plugged the end from the Mainfold and it ran much better. Later today I went out and when I put it into gear the RPM's dropped quickly and it stalled MUCH faster than it ever had. I plugged the Vacuum Advance back in but it did not change - still had a drastic drop in RPM and quick stall.
I may be imagining it but I also think that when I put it into gear the breaks get a bit mushy... or the pedal sinks a tiny bit more.
Any ideas????
Thanks

Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
a leaking brake booster would cause a hard pedal, not mushy
Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
So if it is not the Brake Booster or the Vacuum Advance.... any ideas....????

Re: Stall when put into gear '82 FI
the vacuum advance can't be a large enough vacuum leak to cause stalling. Check the intake manifold and injector seals. Make sure the intake boot isn't split either. Sometimes they will idle fine, but when put into gear and the engine moves, the split will open up and cause trouble
