engine oil

Post by chief »

Just reading through some of the previous posts and pick up on the imporatnce of ZINC in the oil.
I really didn't know that it was all that much of an issue until I began to read up on it.
Anyway here is a (hopefully) a helpful link to a list of oils and thier ZINC value for whoever is interested

Thanks for all the great info contained within the site.

I don't know a whole lot about engine oils, but from what I've been told, most engines like the one in my 81' (stock F.I.) are happiest with something like a 10W-30 oil (especially with colder temperatures here in Washington). I've been using a 15W-40 Rotella T oil, however, because at one point I read that this was appropriate for its higher zinc content. Looking at this chart, however, I see that there's this Valvoline Race oil that has an even higher zinc content, and it's rated at 10W-30. Would this be a better choice than Rotella, or am I missing something?

You will get a lot of different opinions and replies on this(trust me!).There are a lot of us using the Rotella with no problems.Mark sells a zinc additive that you can put into your oil to be safe. I run the Rotella in both Fiats and my motorcycle.
