Timing Belt replacement & other stuff

Post by courtenay »

Keeping in mind that I'm new at this mechanical stuff...what else should I consider changing when I change my timing belt? I'm about to place a parts order and want to make sure I get everything I should have. I've got an '80 Fi with 62,000 Kms.

I would consider changing the belt tensioner bearing while your at it. It $40 worth spending.

Keep in mind the parts you will take out to get to the timing belt. At a minimal you will need:

Coolant (unless you reuse what you have)
Timing belt
Tensioner bearing
AC/Alt Belt
Gasket for the T if you remove it...

I would, just to be ready, order all front seals. If you are already there and see one leaking, might as well take the time to replace them.

I would also check condition of the water pump, again, one of those while you are in there things... (see guys! I learn quickly!)

Check the condition of your coolant hoses... now is the time to replace them since the coolant is out. Best to do it now that on the side of the road....without a replacement

That is all I can remember from memory... would need to go back to my photos to see what else I got out while I did the one in my parts car.

two cam seals, one aux shaft seal and the front crank seal. Plan on replacing all of them, they're usually leaking

Bruce wish I could beam myself over..any salmon showing up yet? I found that Lordco sells most of those seals,T belt ect. not sure about the tensioner bearing though, but Ital Motors does. I trust you have a manual for this.. and a mit full of metric sockets and wrenches.
Good luck

Also remember that you will need a 38mm (or 1-1/2") socket and a breaker bar to remove the crank pulley.

LOL
If you listen to these guys, they will have you rebuilding the engine and repainting the car also. Didn't you say that you just wanted to change the belt?

Hey, if they are changing the Timing belt and all the original covers are in place they will need to remove all those parts anyway. I just went through this. You could just remove everything, change the belt and put everything back, but why pass the opportunity to clean the area well, replace wear items, and freshen up the parts with some paint.

I took it easy on my first belt change... but now that the engine is coming out I plan to take it all apart and paint, powder coat, and replace parts that can't be restored.

Thanks folks. Yes, the original plan was to change the belt, but at the same time see if anything else down there should be checked as well. I now know there's quite a few things to look at. I figure I might just as well order the tensioner bearing, seals and hoses and go ahead and change them while I have the front of the car apart. Spider Jim is going to come down and give me a hand with all this (thank goodness).

Thanks for the thought, Chris. Jim is going to come down to give me a hand - and some confidence. I found the seals at the local Hartman's Auto supply, but am going to send away for the bearing.
And while the salmon may be around, between drywalling the basement and the crappy weather, I haven't had a chance to get my boat out of storage to try to find them!!
