I figured out the rattling noise that started when I came back from the car show. My long bottom alternator bolt lost its nut and back most of the way out. The bolt threads are now worn down. No big deal I will get a new nut and bolt.
My question is therer seems to be a lot of wiggle room on the bolt where the alternator can slide back and forth. Are there suspose to be spacers on the bolt to prevent the sliding back and forth.
OK I am no artist
should there be spacers where the red boxes are?
Or did the PO put in the wrong alternator.

At least yours is loose... the alternator in my parts car is frozen in place. Too far away to take photos.

yeah.
i'm recalling that the alternator mounting tabs have 'spacers' in them. if my memory serves correctly, w/out those 'spacers' your alternator mount should also be a too big diameter for the bolt as well.

They are steel bushings, the front one has a collar and is pressed in from the front into the aluminum mounting tab( if memory serves me). The rear bushing is a sliding fit and locates the alternator in the bracket. There are also two different lengths of the bolt. One is about 1/4" longer and can't be removed unless the rad. is also taken out.

I am not sure there is enough space in the mounting tabs holes to fit in a bushing of this altenator. At least it did not seem like there was last night. The bolt I had was just small enough to remove without removing the rad. I got a new bolt, a locking nut and some spacers that I can get to work for the time being.
Tonight while I am putting everything back together I will try and figure out what alternator is in the car. With all the other things I found in this car I would not be surpirse if the alt is for another car.
