Yesterday I posted about a leaky transmission. Well today while on my way to zephyrhills car show my transmission failed about 70 miles away from the house and 100 miles from the show. I started hearing gear chatter in 1,2,3, and 5th. 4th was the only gear with no chatter. There was also a serious whine. At a truck stop. I pulled up on a curb to access the transmission and it was leaky seriously. I checked the pan bolts and they were all tight. I had a half gallon of gl-1 with me. The wife and I pumped in 38 degrees weather. Man is sucked big time. GL-1 when its cold is a pain. After a about six or so pump. fluid started coming out so I knew it wasn't that low.
After I returned home i removed the pan and inspected the gears. All gears nicked up,(i will get pics later) what failed? The transmission shifted fine through all gears. So I researched parts. Bearings, gears and gasket kit going to run about 600.00 new polski transmission going to run between 2300-2500. Rebuilt transmission going to run around 1800. I called midwest bayless and got a quote for 950.00 with out core for a rebuilt. so for a extra 350.00 i can get a rebuilt transmission and keep my trashed transmission for later rebuild on my own. Anybody every deal with midwest bayless? Their transmission comes with a 1 year warranty. HMMM What to do?

Matt is a good guy, but I'd hesitate to keep a trashed tranny for $350. You can buy them regularly much cheaper than that.

Re: Transmission options
Mark was was weighing the option of doing the rebuild myself which the parts run about 600.00 or purchasing a transmission from Matt at Midwest bayless. He doesn't need a core because is has quite a few of them already. I was going to keep it for a rebuild down the road. 950 is the best price I found out there for a rebuilt transmission and it comes with a one year warranty. I could just remove and transfer the shifter and the bell housing and be back on the road.So Cal Mark wrote:Matt is a good guy, but I'd hesitate to keep a trashed tranny for $350. Re: Transmission options
I misunderstood your post. I was under the impression there was a 350 core charge. 950 is very cheap for a rebuilt unit.

Re: Transmission options
So red107, did you finally go ahead with the Midwest Bayless trans? Lasy post over 7 months ago I realize...
I may be in the market for a rebuilt tranny, MB now charges $1000, Obert is $1100, Vicks is $1250, IAP is $1950 (ouch).
Any reviews on these various units, and how they turned out?
I have been going through the Brooklands manual on the rebuild, and it runs about 30 pages, one may need access to a press, possibly special tools, etc. Maybe I am a wimp but it seems pretty involved... Looks like a huge time commitment for someone who has never attempted a trans rebuilt, and seems like many opportunities to screw it up.
