It's Here at Last. I'm Finally in the Club.

Post by Exit98 »

Back in September I joined the Forum and announced that I didn't have a spider, but that I wanted one. Everyone was very nice as I posted periodically about my search. I did the research, checked out a bunch of cars, visiting 5 states to look at ones for sale. I bid on two on ebay, out-bid both times. One of them I shouldn't have let get away, but I wasn't willing to get into a bidding war.

So anyway, I just couldn't find the right one for me. Then, three weeks ago I was doing my daily ebay check and this pretty yellow Los Angeles 124 popped up. It had a $5,800 "buy it now", and there were three or four bids already in for about $2,500. A few hours later I had a 45 minute chat with the owner, and the next day we made a deal. (He had it on Craigslist too.)

I can't believe I bought a spider 3000+ miles away, sight on seen. But I just threw the rule book out the window and did it.

Today, 13 days later the car was delivered to my door. I already had all the paperwork done, title transferred, car registered and insured and had historic plates. So I skipped lunch, drove to the gas station and filled the empty tank then drove back to the office in my new Fiat.

It starts, runs and stops. It's a little rough around the edges but I can't find any rust. It seems pretty cool. Here's some pictures. The car's filthy from it's cross country trip on an open car carrier, but even so, it still looks a little better than it acutally is. I figure the paint's about 10 or 12 years old. Take a look at the interior. Yes, it is Green. I'll bet it was a very expensive job, even the consoles are covered in the green. But its a little tatty now too.

So anyway, I'm pretty pleased so far. All the New Jersey guys have made me feel very welcome, particularly NJFIAT 1981 (George) and LANCIAHF (Ralph) who have provided endless support and advice. They are coming to see the car on Sunday, I hope they like it too.

Welcome! Always room for another yellow Spider!

I admire your perseverance, and hope to meet you at a mid-Atlantic event.

I think you'd have a hard time finding a rust free one on our side of the world. Looks like you caught yourself a good one!

Congrats Doug. That is a very nice looking car!The interior is really well done,I bet the p/o dropped some serious money into that.Perseverance pays off.I bought my car in a similar manner. After losing a couple on ebay,I made a deal off line with a owner of the one I 'had to have'.You have a great support group with all the Jersey Boys :D Good luck1

Enjoy your Fiat Spider. There is no other car like it. Trust me. I am restoring my 1971 Fiat as we speak. I have it disassembled now. Ready to remove undercoating and begin under car restoration.

Thanks everybody.

Hey Armere, let's hear more about your project, and some pics too.

I really wanted a 71/72. I missed a great one. I gave up looking there just have been no good driver quality ones around for months. I definitely wanted to get a good "driver", not a project. I'm too old for that. I want to drive around with the top down now.

Have you ckecked out "Azygoustoyou's" project? Brady's doing an unbelievable job on an early Spider. Take a look at his posts.

I bought a brandy new 72 back in the day. Now 35 years or so later I've got me a spider once again. I hope its as much fun the second time around.

Way to go Doug! That's a great looking car. And the interior! You got a one of a kind there.
What year is it?
Enjoy.

Thanks Ron, it's a 76, although its got an earlier 1800 block and head.

PO blew up motor in 2002 right after he bought it. He sunk a lot of $ into it since.

We had a beautiful 50 - 55 degree weekend here at the Jersey Shore. NJFIAT 1981 (George) and LANCIAHF (Ralph) came by with thier Spiders and we spent the day together. They looked over my new one and seemed to like it. We all took a ride to the beach and generally enjoyed the cars.

I've got some pics around here someplace, but they are way to big. I'll try to figure out how to shrink them and post a couple.

Doug
