Exhaust Manifold

Post by ralphcap »

The exhaust manifold on my 1981 FI 2000 has a split by the center bolt. Is the manifold busted or should the split be there? I'm changing the gasket on the manifold. Will I be able to back the manifold off the bolts on the engine block without unbolting the other end?

Not too sure about the split. My manifold does not have a split in it. But is is a turbo manifold, which is different from the standard cars. I can tell you that you have to disconnect the manifold from the exhaust header pipr prior to removing it from the engine.

While attempting to unbolt the exhaust manifold from the exhaust header pipe I broke off one of the bolts. Now what? How many bolts bolts are used to attach the header pipe to the manifold. I'm seeing five. What should I use on those long nuts. I was using a 13mm socket on the one I broke off. I'm trying to replace the exhaust manifold gasket.

first step is lots of penetrating oil. There are/were 6 bolts on the flange. When you get around to putting it back together, use antiseize on all of the studs

If a stud has broken off in the manifold, I had posted some pictures on a method to get the stud out if you have access to a welder or someone who does.
I'm not sure how to provide the link, but under "general maintenance" Feb. 7th broken stud welding method.
It does work... usually
Good luck as I find when drilling the things out the sides get scored and I've broken countless easy-outs as well.
I have a friend down the street with a milling machine, and that can do it as there is no "wobble" in the drill bit.
Do soften it up over night with penetrating compound as well.

I would take it to a machine shop and they can install a new stud. This is a common occurrence.

I highly recommend taking Denise's advice. For the few bucks it would cost to get it done right, it isn't worth the risk of messing up your manifold.
