Sticky air flow meter after acceleration? -Fuel Injected car

Post by BurbankJalopy »

Hi
I've got a stock 81 fuel injected spider. My car runs great except occasionally after heavy acceleration, all of a sudden it's getting too much fuel. I can clear it by abruptly kicking the throttle one time and it's fine again. I suspect the Air Flow Meter is sticking..what do you think? It happens only after heavy acceleration and it smells of fuel/exhaust and runs rough when it does happen. I can't think of any other relevent moving parts that could be causing this. Again, it goes away immediately when i 'kick' the gas pedal quickly. I tend to not rev high RPMS, infact I probably lug the engine if that is relevent to your diagnoses. It really acts like the choke is coming on (but this is fuel injected) I get around 20-25mpg and this is just an intermittent problem. It's only a minor irritation now, as it is fixed with a jab of my foot. Anyway do you think my air flow meter is sticking? I've checked 3 times, and it is not a Canadian Toyota made gas pedal, so I've ruled out the gas pedal sticking. Thanks in advance.

That is something that you can check yourself. You can manually push on the gate and see if you feel any resistance or rubbing. Go slowly and let it travel the entire distance of range. If there is no rub, forward or backward, then I doubt thats it. Sometimes those gates can get gunked up and need to be cleaned and lubed.

Are you infering the pedal problem is because it was assembled in Canada?
Or perhaps the sending unit itself, likely engineered in Japan, has an issue at times.
