Anyone added a fuel filter before pump?

Post by wachuko »

Folks,

Since our fuel pumps are installed before the fuel filter, they could get damage by any debris in the fuel tank. Has anyone added a filter before the pump to protect it?? If so, what did you use?

Since there are only four bolts that hold on the tank. it would be much wiser to remove the tank and clean it out than adding a pre filter.

I just did that, but wanted to see if folks have added a filter before the pump as well.

Every once in a while we get some new guy that has tried it, not advisable by me. The pump has a very low draw power, that is why it is placed very close to the tank and lower than the tank, and that is why Fiat did not add one. Its push power is very great. Obstructing the gravity flow from the tank is not advisable, but it is your car and ...

Thank you, just that I did a search and could not find anything on it. Wanted to check before doing something that would also jeopardize the fuel pump.

Yes, I did it to my 81 Fi. After purchasing the car it began to run rough that was due to the PO not cleaning the tank after ten year storage but told me he had!!. It came with new pump lines cleaned injectors etc. A few miles later the new pump was ruined and I had the tank deep cleaned and painted. While I was going over the system I decided to try this. The only way it works due to the draw is to get the pre-filter low and inline with the pump. You need a very high flow filter. Mine was from Autozone and is about the same size as the pump. I do not remember the part number.

When I was dealing with my corroded tank, an owner on the mira forum told me he installed a pre-filter. Said he used a Fram G6366. Supposed to be very coarse with low restriction. Told me the original application is an Audi 4000 built between '80 and
'87.

I did not install one myself.
