WEBER 32 ADF 14 Carb and Abarth Inlet Manifold

Post by ch33kster »

Hi Guys,

I have a 1969 AS Spider with the 1438cc engine. I have the original Weber Carb fitted, Im afraid I cant remember
the model.

The car runs very rich and pushes out heavy fumes on changing gear. I had serviced the carb and replaced all the appropriate parts when I rebuilt thye engine.I have adjusted the Idle to try and get the best out of the car before it stalls.

I had read that by upgrading the carb to a 32 ADF, the car would run better and be more economical. I had also read that I would need to upgrade to an 1800 inlet manifold.

I brought a Weber 32 ADF 14 Carb last Autumn off Ebay. I rebuilt it and serviced it with the correct gasket set and new jets. Its now as good as new.

I recently bought an Abarth inlet Manifold off a 125 Strada that would fit a Twin cam / Lancia etc. but I have a feeling that it may be off a 2000cc vehicle. I havn't tried to fit it yet until I got feedback from you knowledgable guys out there.

I need to know if I will gain better performance and a more economical drive? and will the 32 ADF 14 Carb fit the Abarth Inlet Manifold onto my engine without any problems???

Help as always appreciated,

Cheers, Charles

Charles,

if this is the manifold:

then it should not be a problem - a fellow 124 AS (1967) owner in Portugal is using this one on his 1400, see http://fiat124sport.livejournal.com/?skip=15

ciao,

Stefan, that is the same as the inlet manifold I've just bought... have you been spying on me? :D

Now for the next set of (stupid) questions:

Is it self explanatory as to what pipe goes where when fitting?
Do I need to be advised on anything in particular?
Should it make my "Little Blue" more economical and smoother?
Will I still be able to fit my original air filter to it???

I know I ask for a lot.

Guys, you are always prompt and still the best!

PS: Stefan, funny thing is, even been looking for your friends website for quite sometime
now but couldn't remember it. A great journal!

Sorry but a manifold from a ritmo/strada 125 will not fit a ADF series carb. The manifold will fit a TC head but the carb opening is for a DATRA/DAT series carb like the ones the Lancia Beta has.

The text that runs along side the Picture on the 124 Journal (which is excellent) mentions the following:

"The intake ports have already been carefully matched and blended to the maximum intake runner opening as described by the intake gaskets. Since the 1608 head's ports are a perfect match for the gasket too, all I have to do now is get it on. I hope this will not force me to lift the head, but knowing the 1438 as I do I'm afraid that this might end up being required due to my insistence in keeping the two top mountings of the intake being effected via studs instead of bolts...

I do have to make this swap, though, the damn vacuum port for the servo is driving me nuts..."

I don't fully understand what he has written in regards to the "damn vacum port"??? I have emailed the website but haven't had a reply. Does anybody know if they are a member of this forum??? What extra work will i need to carry out ie in blending?

Lanciaf thank you for your response but I trust this Guys journal but sadly he doesn't explain anything else about this upgrade. All information that I receive is always useful.

Charles,
from what I understood between the lines he had problems with the original intake manifold he used before. But to uncover this secret: why don't you just send him an email?
Another question I have for you: why did you get a 32ADF? The original 1438 (at least in Europe) was a 34DHS10 - a brillant carb with bigger barrels - so better performance of the engine - which would be a perfect fit for your intake manifold.
ciao,
Stefan

My original carb is a stock 26/34 DHSA Weber which has been on since day one.
I emailed the Journal guy but I haven't had a response yet.

I've just found the web page that mentions why to upgrade it also answers a
lot of my prev. questions  : http://www.mirafiori.com/~corey/How-To/Carb.htm
Written by non other than bradartigue! A really useful page and very informative.

One of the only "cons" mentioned is this:
"If you intend to use the ADFA on a pre-1975 model year car, you will have to install the heater pipe
(runs under the exhaust manifold) from a 1975+ model year Fiat 124."

How hard is this to do on a 1969 AS 1438cc? Will I need another water pump??
