Casting on manifold

Post by azygoustoyou »

I'm looking into getting a manifold from someone and I saw one on Ebay. The guy on Ebay said that the casting number on the manifold should match. I asked him what it should match and all he says is the casting on the manifold should match. By now I just want to smack him. So what should the casting # on the manifold match. The down pipe? The manifold is only one piece. I want to get an earlier manifold without the emissions. I really want to make sure my down pipe on a 82 will work with a 68-73 manifold. Can anyone enlighten me on this.

Brady,

(80-85) Fuel injected 4-2-1 manifold can only go with the (80-85) downpipe. The mating surfaces have 6 bolts

(68-73) carbed 4-2-1 manifold can only go with the (68-73) downpipe. The mating surfaces have 4 bolts.

If you got the earlier (68-73) 4-2 cast iron manifold, you need the (68-73) 2-1 downpipe.

One look at the vick auto sport (printed, or pdf) catalogue and you will understand.

This is what you have now, note the six bolt holes: http://www.vickauto.com/cgi-bin/store/27-2332.html

This is what you need for the 68-73 manifold: http://www.vickauto.com/cgi-bin/store/27-2317.html

Good thing, as the early downpipe is priced reasonably.

Hi Brady,

What Matt said. A 82 down pipe will not work on a 68-73 downpipe.

I don't know. It's starting to get pretty expensive just to change over. Maybe I'll just stick with my headers. I was trying to reduce some of the heat in the engine compartment. They want $225 just to ceramic coat the manifold not counting buying and shipping it to me in the first place. Then shipping it to the coating co.

I had a header in my old spider. I made a heat shield to protect the coolant overflow bottle and never had a problem.... Keep your headers!

Yea keep your headers. I picked up a few hints here and have not had a problem yet, longest drive in one go was 400 kms.
It was suggested to keep the overflow bottle at least half full and I used some heat shield wrap around the rubber heater hoses, some even 2 layers, and wrap part of the over-flow hose that goes to the rad and is a bit close to the pipes.
My headers are ceramic coated though but still freeking hot.

Someone dosent have all thier facts straight here. I have a down pipe for a cat car that runs off to the side and it DOES bolt up to an early manifold.

Some 79 spiders came with a 4-2-1 cast iron header that bolted up to a three bolt cat flange. Not the 4 bolt cat flange that Brady has.

Is that what you have?

That would be me with the incorrect facts or really the lack of facts. Anyways, still waiting for the final price with shipping.
