Hello from Sydney Australia

Post by austspider »

I have recently purchased a 1974 Spider. Needs only a little work. Hope to get some use from the forum as it seems very informative.

Welcome to the Forum, you'll find plenty of helpfull enthusiasts on here, even a few Aussies :D
Sydney seems to be the Spider centre of Australia, a pity there's not a broader coverage in the other capitals and regional centres.
Has your '74 been converted to rhd? What issues need attending to? Pictures please.....

My Spider is RHD. Spend some money on a good service. Recored radiator, did the timing belt and fixed a couple of oil leaks. Needs a good detail and then I can drive it more. Would like to put some 15" wheels on it but hard to find.

Curly,

Your Spider looks fantastic. I would love a set of Simmons for mine but way to expensive.

Unfortunately Simmons has stopped making custom wheels. So for Fiats, that's sad news.

Got any pics?

G'day, I'm over in the west but was in Sydney last week. Enjoyed the Motorfest for those who might have been there also.

Is your 74 a CA/ML version? i.e. does it have large black rubber overriders on the front and rear bumpers?

If not, it wouldn't happen to be white with black cloth racing seats and black Vitaloni rear vision mirrors by any chance? The '74s aren't that common down under...

Yes my car is white and came with racing seats which are about to be removed and replaced with retrimmed originals. The car actually came from WA. The guy I got it from purchased from a guy in WA. The bumpers are chrome with over riders.
Do you know the car?

Sure do - my '74 was used as a reference when this car was being put back together by the then owner Scott Allen. It was then owned by a guy named Rod Griffiths (Navy LEUT) who also got some pieces of trim from me before it was resprayed. Small world... in '74 spider circles anyway.

Good to see it on the forum.

Hi Perthling
Sure is a small world. Do you happen to know what year it was resprayed and put back together. The paint is still very good (after I polish it). My guess would be about 5 years. Speaking of trim, do you still have any spare bits & pieces?

The car was originally painted and reassembled about 8 or 9 years ago by Scott - previously it was a burgundy colour but it never was driveable in Australia in that colour. He drove it for some time then sold it, and I think some rust was starting to come through in the rear wheel arches. LEUT Griffiths was planning to repaint it in a white sparkle, but noting that it's now sold he may have just had some areas repaired and touched up locally. If the paint is just a straight white, some areas may be the original coating.

Let me know what bits you're after and I'll have a look. I think my garage had been already raided for most of the missing bits I could provide.
