Oil Recommendation
Re: Oil Recommendation
synthetics vs real oil. Do some research, synthetic oil is real oil but from premium stocks. It's not really synthetic like the name implies
Re: Oil Recommendation
This is definitive proof that old vintage aged motor oil is suitable for Fiat engines.

Re: Oil Recommendation
The glovebox owners manuals I've seen specify 10W-30. I don't think 15W-40 was invented until the '80s (as a synthetic). It certainly wasn't around in 1973 when my Spider was built. Maybe Brooklands and others decided to go with "conventional wisdom" of the day when the aftermarket manuals were printed, and recommend diesel-rated oil? I don't own a factory manual, but I'll look at one to satisfy my curiosity.pope wrote:Hey Bernie, where did the 10W-30 number come from? I have a Fiat factory shop manual and a Brookline manual and both specify only 15W-40 as the multi-grade oil.
I like that Hicks oil.
If you like Collector's Choice oil, ask your favorite supplier to order it. We could support at least one retailer on each coast, what with UPS charges and all. I'm getting mine drop-shipped from a distributor in PA, and he isn't terribly enthusiastic. There's a British vintage auto parts supplier who carries the stuff, but only in straight 30W. The folks at Hicks were very helpful, and I briefly entertained the idea of becoming a distributor, but one pallet of the stuff is 96 cases! Yeah, there's the many Carlisle events, etc., but I'm retired, for cryin' out loud

Re: Oil Recommendation
My being a firm believer in synthetics stems from our racing days. Debris knocked an oil line off of Ron's car at Daytona during a race, causing no oil pressure and he was able to drive the car back to the pits without causing any damage to the engine. Same goes for the synthetic tranny oil and gear lube. It has saved us untold amounts of money in protection so my 72 uses all synthetic.knightdalejb wrote:sorry, guess i was pretty vague...a bad habit of mine.
i meant synthetics versus real oil. not just performance , but engine wear and tear and making your car (or my truck) last longer... run smoother... cooler....better milage... is there really a difference for the average guy driving an average car?

Re: Oil Recommendation
Here is a 70's glove box page that has oil info.
Says to use 10W-30 between 5° to 32°F and 20W-40 from 32° to 95°F.
Denise, you are so right about synthetics. Kinda freeky to have Guy Croft just show up out of nowhere! You are being watched.

Guy's a great fella. I consider it more like he's giving me guidance than of being watched....and you know I need all the guidance I can get!pope wrote: Kinda freeky to have Guy Croft just show up out of nowhere! You are being watched.

Re: Oil Recommendation
thanks Denise... I mis-spoke with 'real' oil, meant regular oil... but just wanted an opinion from someone that wasn't a paid spokesperson. I'll look up which synthetics to use when I get to changing out the old stuff.
Re: Oil Recommendation
people on TV on shows like horsepower or trucks. any advert, spokesperson... I'll listen, but just wanted to ask a bunch of regular people that had real world experience, because I don't. I wasn't calling anyone on here that....
