In-transit dying

Post by kmartin83 »

Okay, my new problem.
I was driving today as it was 77 degrees outside, and in the middle of my dream road the car just dies. I had to pull over, turn the key to off and then start it back up (when the battery idiot light came on). I checked the battery cable and tightened it a bit, but wanted to ask the opinion of the board -- does this sound like an alternator starting to go out? This hasn't happened before.

Does the battery light stay on now? The car should run on the battery until it's drained if the alt is faulty. It sounds more like a connection to me.

not an alternator problem if the battery had enough voltage to restart the car. But, the cables shouldn't be loose at all. If you can tighten them, then they weren't tight enough to begin with

i had an issue same, or very very similar that i lived with for years.

driving along at cruising speed, when for no explained reason the car would just stop running. pull over to the side, wait about 120 seconds, and the car would allow itself to start again. this would happen about twice per season.

well, the beginning of this season it happended three times in the same week, so i had to investigate.

coil wire positive terminal...replaced the spay terminal male and female. the balance of the season i have had zero trouble.

The battery light does not stay on. The car will start right back up as soon as the light comes on when I turn the key, but if the light doesn't come on then, nothing! The connections to the battery are now tight.

I am hoping that making sure the connections are good will solve.

check the harness to the ignition switch-you may have some burned connections there, or you may need a new ign switch

re-tightened everything down again. Took for a drive and no dying. Hopefully that was the problem. Battery not draining because starting back up is easy. Thanks for all the help and info. I'll get this yet.

Thanks
