Seat Replacement...Fitment question

Post by manorat »

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum. I have a 1982 spider that i've had for a couple of years. I'm looking into making the car something that could be run in autocross events. The stock seats have almost no side bolster support (barley holds up in the twisties around home) so i've started looking at aftermarket seats. I found this pair on ebay that are aesthetically exactly what I want, classic race style. But I don't know about fitment. How can i determine whether they'll work or not? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

width is the big issue with any replacements. Make sure you check the rules for whatever organization you're going to compete with, some require seat backs higher than your helmet

Check this thread: http://fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php ... a&start=15

I installed some Corbeau Classic buckets in mine. Corbeau makes the adapters to mount them to the stock location and the width is acceptable. The adapters do raise the seat slightly in the car (maybe an inch or so) but there are factory spacers installed at the adapter base that I'm going to remove to lower about half an inch.

If you're going racing, Mark is right about checking class rules regarding seats. I think this is more of an issue when you're actually on a race track though... most autocrosses are pretty lax and could care less about seats, as long as they are secure and the belts work.

RJ80,if I ever change the seats in my 82,those Corbeau's will be the ones I use. They are a great looking seat, made well, and look like they belong in a Spider.Nice work!
Unless you are planning to run a SCCA Solo or Pro Solo event, you should be fine with those seats and stock style belts. If the plan is to move up into those, you will have to use a racing seat and 5 points.By that point it wont be a streetable car anyway,in most cases.

Thanks Craig, I've been really happy with them.

One caveat -- they are a bit snug for my current 36-in. waist, but they're also good motivation for dropping those extra pounds!

I saw several cars at Mira's Oregon campout with Scat Rallys and they looked good and fit well.

Trey, did you snap any pics of cars with those seats in them? I would love to see one if you did.

If I can make a suggestion here... I just changed out the seats in my spider and I used a set of EMPI low back race trim seats. They fit great and are super comfy plus they are on sale for super cheap right now if you go here...

http://www.jeepswag.com/empi/buy2/

I chose the ones without headrests... 140-145 plus 75 shipping.... You can beat it for the fit and the comfort.

Hope this helps out. -Joe

a set of EMPI low back
How did you fit those in the car. That is a good deal and look pretty good.

The Classics are very similar to the seats that came in the Abarths.

I would love to see a picture of those in the car. I have been thinking about getting some for several years. With renewed interest in my car I may have to get some seats this year.
