Gas leaking for carburetor inlet fitting...

Post by RudeDog »

The gas inlet fitting going into the carburetor from the fuel filter was leaking. I thought it was a cracked hose so I replaced the hose and clamp but it still leaked. I realized that the gas leak was between the copper tube with the nipple on it that the gas line fits over and the carburator body itself. I wiggled the copper fitting and was able to wiggle it free from the carburator body. It doesn't have any threads or gaskets or anything... it just slides in and out of the carburetor body. Any idea how I'm supposed to get the copper inlet fitting to stay tight in the carburetor body? Is it glued in somehow? I tried getting a small o-ring like what they use on threaded gas inlets and I was going to try to put it around the copper fitting and wedge it into the hole but the hole is too tight of a fit to get an o-ring wedged in there.

Thanks
So Cal Mark

those fittings are just pressed in. Use a brass hammer to tap it in tightly. But a better repair is to use a pipe tap and thread the hole, then get a nipple with the appropriate pipe thread. If you go racing, that upgrade is mandatory

Sounds good. For those who've done this before... can you make any recommendations as to what size pipe tap to use and what gas inlet fittings to pick up? I'd like to get it right the first time. I have the Weber 32 ADFA carburetor and I'm replacing the inlet coming from the fuel filter.

Good post. Now I know where my minor leak is coming from! I also thought it was the fuel line itself, that was my leak source.

An alternative, but clearly not as good a solution as tapping, is to rough up the brass fitting then use epoxy to hold it into the carburetor.

Even tapping in this instance with the existing parts is not a perfect solution, the brass part is not the right size for a properly tapped interface (the diameter of the brass tube is not the correct diameter for the hole in the carburetor casting). Getting a new piece of brass tubing in the correct diameter for a tapped hole in the carb body to replace the existing part would be the best choice.

That is a nice fix. I would definitely investigate that repair versus reusing the existing brass part.

Thanks for resurrecting that link.
