Manual Transmission Plugs

Post by kmartin83 »

Went to get the tranny fluid changed and the shop guy told me he couldn't get the top plug out to fill the fluid back up. Was able to fill it only about half-way. Any suggestions, and where can I pick up any replacement plugs?

For one, don't take it back to that mechanic anymore. That top 'plug' is not a plug -- it is a sensor, and should have some wires coming out of it (though it does look like a plug, especially if the wires are missing). The lower one on the side of the tranny is the correct fill plug, and filling the tranny to the point where it runs out of the plug hole is correct. As long as the mechanic got that far, you should be OK.

Thanks for the message. I thought I was going batty (nothing new, there) because I couldn't find anywhere in my shop manual where it had a top plug, and I'm never really worked on transmissions before.

On the plus side, I got my transmission fluid changed for free! :D

"On the plus side, I got my transmission fluid changed for free!"

Now, that's pretty good. Changing Tranny fluid ranks right up there with changing starters or changing engine mounts as one of the most aggrivating chores to attempt at home (without a lift).

I just did mine it was tough to fill from the bottle so i ran a fuel
line from the filler hole on the tranny to the engine compartment
and slipped the hose over the nipple and feed the oil that way, it was
hard to feed so i sqeezed the bottle to force the oil down the hose
if you try this make sure you dont get oil on the nipple or hose
before fitting them together ! and use a big enough hose because a
small fuel line will be hard to feed that thick oil down ...

There are several threads about this in the forum, but you may want to make sure the guy used the correct oil in the tranny. The newer GL-5 stuff can eat up the brass parts over time.
