Muffler Woes

Post by DMECMAnderson »

The strap on my muffler has failed at one of the welds, causing the muffler to dangle at an odd angle. Can this simply be welded back together? Is there someother fix or am I looking at a new muffler... :(

depends if the strap rusted off. The muffler shell is pretty thin, so it'll depend on how much material is left and the condition of it

get some of that metal strapping with the holes perforated in at about every 3/8"... make a strap out of that that wraps the muffler entirely. you can hang your own supports from that.

Mike is I believe referring to pipe hanger strapping which is available in the plumbing section at any hardware or other home improvement store. It is galvanized and will last until you find another solution. Holding the muffler up will save your other pipes from crimping and failing until you can find a new muffler or other repair to the one you have.

You can try a universial muffler hanger until you get your repairs done. It can fit on the tail pipe or the exhaust tube. They cost between $3-$5 and can be picked up at any parts store. There was one on my car when I bought becase the rubber hangers where shot. It looks like this
