2L crankshaft
2L crankshaft
I'm new here and have been reading a lot of good information that i hope to put to good use soon. I have a question about a 2L crank. I just read on another forum that my crank can not be turned because of a hardened layer that will be removed leaving the journals too soft. Did I read that right? If I am in need, does anybody sell new cranks?
Re: 2L crankshaft
This is mostly correct. You can "turn" your crank but you will turn off the hardened nitride layer which most people consider pretty valuable. Plenty of engines have turned cranks though without any trouble as the crank journals are still surface hardened to a depth of 0.010-0.020". The nitride layer is considerably harder though and provides additional lubricity. Its a give and take. Turning and re-nitriding is possible but not a financially viable solution.
If you want to retain the nitride layer, the great thing about Fiats is that there are plenty of them, and they're cheap. I am sure you can get a good 2 liter crank for less than $100 delivered, which is a little more than most shops charge for turning your existing bad crank.
AFAIK there are no suppliers for new crankshafts.

You might want to check Fun Imported for a crankshaft if the need arises.
