STALLS AT IDLE
STALLS AT IDLE
I have a 74 spider with a stock 1756 cc engine equipped with a stock IDF 40 and stock electric fuel pump. The car starts up alright with the choke and turns over well in the 4,000 rpm range. However, after several minutes in idle it sputters, seems to starve for fuel and then stalls completely. It has done this at least ten times. It was running pretty good before. I have installed new plugs, new fuel filter and cleaned out the carb filter (very clean). The carb is fairly new and seems very clean. I would appreciate getting your insights and guidance before puling the carb apart needlessly.
Re: STALLS AT IDLE
you've got a single idf40? and it idles at 4k? Just want to be clear on the info you're given
Re: STALLS AT IDLE
Sorry Mark, I meant stock double 40IDF's. The engine operates normally in the 4,000 rpm range with the gas pedal pressed. However, when you let go of the gas, it idles for a couple of minutes, sputters and stalls. It does this repeatedly. I also forgot to mention that my spark plugs get carbonized pretty quickly. Thanks for your insight and guidance. James G
Re: STALLS AT IDLE
the first thing I'd look at is float level, it sounds like fuel might be dumping in from the main discharge nozzle at idle.

Thanks Mark. I installed a transparent fuel line between the carbs and realized that I was not getting fuel and traced the problem back to the fuel pump. It operated when the ignition was cranking but stopped when the ignition went to run mode ( or ACC.) Consequently ,it filled up the carb at crank and the car run just enough to finish the fuel contents of the bowls and starved after that. Once I connected the fuel pump directly to the battery it ran fine. It has now become an electrical problem and I will attempt to figure out how to fix it. If you have a suggestion, I would be grateful. Thanks again, James G.
Re: STALLS AT IDLE
It's the original mounted next to the gas tank. All the wiring and relays are original stock. Thanks, JamesGSo Cal Mark wrote:is it an original electric fuel pump or a conversion?
Re: STALLS AT IDLE
only asking because the original system used a relay, and most add-ons are wired direct to the ignition switch
