Jeff, instead of a rattlesnake, we have a black snake that resides in the shop for that very purpose.

i use a full box of moth balls, 25% on the floor in a pie tin in the front, 25% in a pie tin in the back, 25% in the engine bay and 25% in the trunk. the car is parked in a garge with lots of activity. after 15 years, zero mice in the car. we've always had a dawg, and the animal smell might dissuade some rodents, but i doubt it.

others claim that dryer sheets work just as nice as the moth balls but do not smell, but I ain't attempting to fix what ain't broke.

Still others have offered that stuffing some steel wool inside the tail pipe blocks a potential hiding spot.

Whenever I see a moth flying around, I never noticed if they had balls or not. I thought they were unisex. I'll have to pay more attention to the details.

Now, you really can't go by what you see since it seems there are many moths missing a part or two.

Man, I took my '72 to the storage garage today and my '64 Nova was covered with Deacon filled rat turds! The little bastards must have figured out that I poisoned them, because they crapped/pissed under the hood, on the hood and on the trunk. It doesn't look like they got inside, at least.

How to smell moth balls? Just spread thier little legs and sniff.

We have pack rats, big mean nasty things that fight you tooth and nail. I have cats, you need a big un to deal with the rats. As well, the moment I see any sign of rats/mice, out come the traps en masse.
Most people around here, if you have to store a vehicle all winter, open the hood, that is one of their favorite place to build nests, and they will not reside there if hood open.

I have some of the much maligned mothballs for under the hood, and two bags of cloves for stuff I like....

I just found turds in mine while taking apart the interior for a re-do... I see where dryer sheets work as well. I will try moth balls in the winter and dryer sheets too!
